When Universal Studios Singapore opens in early 2010, fans of Universal and Disney theme parks in California and Florida will find a lot of familiar rides and attractions on the opening day visitors map.

Universal Studios Singapore opens on 14 February 2010

Universal Studios Singapore will open 5 pm to 9 pm every night from 14 Feb to 21 Feb. Visitors can purchase tickets, costing $10 each, and get dining and shopping vouchers of the same value. The park’s dining and retail outlets will be open for dinners/quick-bites and shopping.

Ticket sales start from 12.18pm Friday, 12 February, at the ticket booths outside Universal Studios Singapore.

Admissions will be limited to 3,000 guests a day to ensure guests get a good experience. Members of the public are discouraged from turning up for the tours without a pre-bought ticket.

Thinking of staying at one of the newly opened hotels at Singapore's first integrated resort (IR) anytime soon?

If you haven't booked a room at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) by now, you will likely have to wait until March at the earliest before you can take a vacation there. The IR revealed on its Facebook fan page last Friday that its four newly opened hotels 'have reached maximum capacity' until the end of April. Then, in an update posted on Saturday, it said that it had 'managed to free up some rooms' in the months of March and April.

This past weekend (Jan 23-24), RWS saw occupancy rates at its four hotels soar to over 90 per cent, said Robin Goh, assistant director for communications, adding that both the Festive Hotel and the Hard Rock Hotel Singapore reported full houses.

RWS expects to be operating at full or near-full capacity during weekends for the foreseeable future. Already, every room during a nine-day period spanning the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday from Feb 13 to Feb 21 has been snapped up by both Singaporeans and overseas guests eager to be among the first in the world to stay at the IR.

Last Wednesday, RWS celebrated the soft opening of four of its six hotels - Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Hotel Michael and the by-invitation-only Crockfords Tower. This was the first of several phased openings at the $6.59 billion development on the island.

Collectively, the four hotels offer 1,350 rooms and 10 restaurants. The other two hotels - Equarius Hotel and Spa Villas - will add another 500 rooms when they are launched as part of the second phase later this year.

When the IR's call centre first opened its hotline on Jan 11, the first three days alone saw some 5,000 room nights booked. RWS said last week that it expects six out of every 10 visitors to be from overseas, and of these, a quarter will come from China.

But there could be some hope yet for latecomers, said Mr Goh. 'As per industry practice, travel agents have what is known as 'agent allotments' of rooms. Hence, guests might be lucky to snag a room if there are some rooms still available under individual travel agents.'

His advice: Book rooms fast before demand surges as more attractions and entertainment options, including the casino and the Universal Studios Singapore theme park, open over the next few months.

Rack rates start from $400 a night for Festive Hotel, $450 for Hard Rock Hotel and $500 for Hotel Michael.

No fixed dates for opening of theme park, casino at Resorts World Sentosa

No date has been fixed for the opening of the Universal Studios Singapore theme park at Resorts World Sentosa.

Chairman of Resorts World Sentosa Lim Kok Thay made the clarification amid media reports that the theme park is scheduled to open by the end of next week.

Speaking at a news conference after the soft opening of four hotels at the integrated resort on Wednesday, Mr Lim also said it is not known yet when the casino will open as it awaits its operating licence from the authorities.

"After the opening today of Crockfords Tower, the rest of the facilities would follow suit from next week onwards," said Mr Lim. "Obviously that would include the Festive Walk, the Universal theme park, as well as the casino component."

Four of the six hotels at the integrated resort were opened to the public at 8.18am, an auspicious time.

They are Crockfords Tower, Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel Singapore.

Even though Resorts World Sentosa has managed to open ahead of Marina Bay Sands, Mr Lim said it is not a race.

"(Competition to open first) would be foolish, which means that one may end up cutting corners," Mr Lim explained. "So, we've been single mindedly working on our own project and not having to look over our shoulders because we have a masterplan, we stuck by that and we just delivered on the timing that we promised the government. Although, it turned out to be somewhat earlier than we expected."

The convention centre at the integrated resort is also now open, and it has already received 33 bookings.

Some 6,400 staff are already on the payroll.

SOUTH-EAST Asia's first big-name theme park - Universal Studios Singapore - at Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) looks set to open its doors next week, just a week after the resort welcomes visitors to its hotels and shops today.

Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay, chairman of Genting Group, which owns the $6.59 billion resort, said yesterday: 'By the end of next week, Universal Studios Singapore will open, and when we officially launch Resorts World Sentosa later this year, it will be another significant and historical milestone achievement for the group.'

He was speaking at the Kuala Lumpur launch of the group's logo to mark its 45th anniversary.

Crockfords Tower - Crockfords Lounge

In the unofficial but cutthroat race to open Singapore's first integrated resort, Resorts World Sentosa will begin opening in stages from January 20, 2010, starting with its four hotels opening on the same day. It's a long-drawn tussle between the resort and Marina Bay Sands, which just announced that it is looking to open its casino resort at the end of March, but is facing delays due to rains, according to the Wall Street Journal.

It's the first shot in the IR salvo, and in a press statement that just smacks ever so slightly of gloating, chairman of the Genting Group and Resorts World Sentosa Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said, 'We have been single-minded about the promise to deliver a true IR that will make Singapore and Singaporeans proud -- no distractions or excuses -- and today, we are happy to say we marked the first milestone towards delivering on that promise."

As to the opening of the Universal Studios Singapore theme park and more importantly, the casino license, no details are yet available but are in the process of approvals.

Resorts World Sentosa has began operations at two of its four hotels, celebrating with a lion dance and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The four hotels -- Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel Singapore, Crockfords Tower and Hotel Michael -- will offer a total of 1,350 rooms and 10 restaurant outlets at the opening, while another two hotels, Equarius Hotel and Spa Villas, will add another 500 rooms when they launch after 2010.

Festive Hotel

Special packages for hotel rooms at Resorts World Sentosa

Tour agents in Singapore are launching special packages for hotel stays at Resorts World Sentosa, which is slated to open on January 20.

Reservations for the hotel rooms at the integrated resort will open only on January 11 at 10am. However, the integrated resort said it has received hundreds of calls on its reservations hotline.

Travel agents said while they are targeting markets like the US and the UK, their main focus will be visitors from around the region - including Indonesia, Hong Kong and China.

Other travel agents said they are offering hotel stays at Resorts World as part of a regional tour package to places like Malaysia, Bintan and Batam.

Alicia Seah, senior vice-president, Marketing and PR, Commonwealth Travel Service, said: "We are expecting families, leisure travellers as well as business travellers, who are holding their incentive trips here in Singapore."

Moreover, those early birds who do not mind the fact that the casino will not be ready until late January will get 30 to 40 per cent off the travel deals.

Judy Lam, group vice-president, Sales & Marketing, Tour East, said: "The pre-opening packages can start from S$200 to S$300 for either a two-night package or a three nights' package. The actual opening packages would start from about S$500."

During the soft launch, room rates at Resorts World's three hotels - Hotel Michael, Festive Hotel and Hard Rock Hotel - are likely to range between S$400 per night for a regular deluxe room and S$3,000 for the presidential suite.

Pure Magic at Universal Studios Singapore

There’s something magical stirring in Universal Studios Singapore, in the land of Far Far Away. Inside a fantastical store called the Fairy Godmother Potion shop, Princess Fiona’s fairy godmother (if you remember her, she’s the rotund, bespectacled flying ‘witch’ in disguise who’s actually Charming’s mother) is bottling magical elixirs out of an enormous tank.

Step inside this store and you’ll find wooden beams, brick walls, huge doorways and Shrek characters welcoming you as you enter. The space is bound to draw you into the mystical world of Shrek, where fantastical characters come to life: donkeys shoot their mouths off and ogres are actually friendly.

I was awestruck when I saw the store, which is complete and has been fitted out. There are three things you can do there: there’s a retail shop for you to bring home your memories of the park, a counter where ‘potions’ aka fresh juices would be sold and a ferris-wheel kiddies can ride while their parents shop or get a breather. How awesome is that?

At the Fairy Godmother Potion Shop, you’ll find all things Shrek! Personally, I’m in love with Gingy, the gingerbread man but I absolutely love the huge variety of Shrek plush toys, character caps, photo frames and lots, lots more! (Note to fellow fans of Gingy, you HAVE TO look out for the stuffed confectionery character on the shelves, it’s simply a sweetheart! Get the pun?)

At the drinks stand (called Fairy Godmother’s Potion Factory) where fresh juices are served, the best thirst quenchers for anyone are served. Rejuvenating and healthy, the little ones would love it too. The most wondrous thing is that you can ‘brew’ any concoction you desire, and this is limited only by your imagination.

A youth 'elixir' made of beetroot, strawberry and apple juice -- let your imagination run wild as you come up with your own potions!

Last but not least, the Magic Potion Spin ride would delight the tykes who’re ever eager to hop on another attraction. Offering the rider a bird’s eye view of the hustle and bustle in the shop, the ferris wheel will allow its passengers a chance to catch the fun and whimsical atmosphere.

Honestly, words and pictures can’t capture the magic you will experience as you will be transported into another world when you set foot into the store. So I shan’t deliberate because I know you’ll come. You know you want to!

Queues at Universal Studio Singapore

WE know Singapore is one hot country. That, or it is raining. And cats and dogs at that.

So how have we prepared our guests for this, given that we know there will definitely be snaking queues as excited visitors throng the Universal Studios Singapore park once it is opened?

Look at the pictures themselves for an answer.

Guests can queue in relative comfort in the shade provided; coolers are used to keep temperatures down in queue lines as well. This is one of the queue areas in the Madagascar zone.

This picture was taken in on a hot Tuesday at midday, when our very hardworking workers get a break.

Of course there are outdoor attractions, such as our blockbuster Battlestar Galactica. However, guests can enjoy the airconditioning in the queue areas while they wait their turn before going on the world's tallest pair of dueling coasters.

Universal Studios Singapore has indoor attractions which are air-conditioned as well, and these include the Revenge of the Mummy, Shrek 4-D Adventure, as well as the madcap animals from Madagascar: A Crate Adventure, amongst several others, so seriously, we are very serious about you having serious fun while being kept comfortable and sheltered from the elements.

Most of the pedestrian areas in the resort and Universal Studios Singapore are covered with a special canopy, which cuts off the heat from the sun and reduces the temperature in the area below by three to five degrees celsius. We are also using eco-coolers, which use about 20 percent of the energy used by conventional air conditioners to keep temperatures down.

We have an eco-lagoon as well where underground storage tanks are used to collect and store rainfall for our lush landscapes, and which, while saving the earth and her resources, helps us save up to $160,000 in our water bills.

These are but some of the reasons why we got the BCA Green award this year for our efforts in being environmentally friendly.

Resorts World Sentosa today announced the ticket prices for passes to Universal Studios Singapore, which begins as attractively as S$32 for a senior-citizen day pass to S$118 for a two-day adult pass. Starting from a weekday rate of S$66 for an adult and S$48 for a child, a family of four could enjoy a full-day outing at Universal Studios Singapore for the equivalent of a buffet brunch at an upscale hotel (see Annex A for rates).

Packed with 24 attractions, 18 of them new or adapted for Singapore, visitors to Universal Studios Singapore will be the first to try out many blockbuster theme park rides. The theme park boasts a collection of many world firsts: the world’s biggest single collection of DreamWorks Animation attractions; the world’s first Far Far Away Castle from the world of Shrek; the world’s first Madagascar theme park ride; the world’s tallest dueling roller coaster Battlestar Galactica, the world’s first Sci-Fi zone, and more.

For just one ticket charge, visitors will also get to enjoy non-stop live entertainment that takes them back to seven thematic worlds, as well as 30 theme restaurants and food carts and 20 theme retail stores and kiosks – all within the park to dine and shop from.

Genting: Sentosa resort on track to open in January 2009

Genting Bhd has ruled out speculation that its integrated resort, Resorts World at Sentosa, will open earlier than its January deadline.

Chairman and chief executive Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay said the company was “on track” to opening the resort in Singapore in January.

“We started during a difficult part of the (economic) crisis in terms of funding needs and labour. In the worst case scenerio we were planning to open in December 2010. But construction has gone on smoothly. Our next target was first quarter 2010. But now we are refining it to January 2010,” he said.

The S$6.6bil project was expected to attract 12 million to 13 million visitors in the first full year of operation, he told reporters yesterday after the company inked an agreement with CIMB Investment Bank Bhd and HSBC Bank Malaysia Bhd for its RM1.6bil medium-term notes (MTN) programme.

Lim said that proceeds from the MTN would be used by the company and its subsidiaries for investment, refinancing, working capital requirements and/or other general corporate purposes.

“We originally targeted to raise RM900mil as the first tranche issue under the MTN programme. Due to strong response, we successfully upsized the first tranche issue to RM1.45bil, representing around 1.6 times the initial size,” he said.

The MTN programme, the country’s largest 10-year corporate bond issuance, is guaranteed by Genting and carries a AAA rating by RAM Ratings Services Bhd.

CIMB Investment Bank and HSBC Bank are the joint lead arrangers and joint book runners for the MTN programme.

Meanwhile, Lim said Genting unit Genting Plantations Bhd’s Johor Premium Outlet in Kulai, Johor, was slated to open by July 2011.

Lim also said he was speaking to potential parties on disposing of its non-core asset in the power and oil and gas divisions, “but we are not anywhere close to any transaction.”

“These are still excellent assets to keep. We will sell them only at the right price,” he said.

Located within one of the world’s most extensive, and expensive, tourism projects, Resorts World Sentosa - Universal Studios Singapore will feature 24 rides and attractions, 18 of them original or adapted for Singapore.

Late last month, they held a press conference to unveil the movie theme park offerings for the first time, pulling the drapes off a pair of the world’s tallest duelling coasters, a castle from the world of Shrek, a live show by the infamous Universal Monsters and celebrity look-a-likes including Marilyn Monroe and Betty Boop.

Supporting the attractions was a sneak-peek debut that included an extensive menu of 30 restaurants and food carts, as well as 20 retail stores and carts.

COME early 2010, the muchanticipated S$6.59 billion (RM16 billion) tropical island attraction, Resorts World Sentosa, Singapore, will officially open its gates to visitors all set to become one of Asia’s defining
family holiday destinations.

During a sneak preview of its final stages of construction recently, Resorts World Sentosa announced to the Press that 60 to 70 per cent of all its facilities within its 121 acre area would be operational by the first quarter of next year.

With its mammoth operation of casino-hotels, theme park and oceanarium, as well as other food and retail businesses, the resort expects 12 to 13 million visitors in the first year.

FAMILY FUN: Resorts World Sentosa will officially open its gates to visitors — all set to become one of Asia’s defining family holiday destinations

This would create 45,000 jobs directly and indirectly. Leading attraction in the integrated resort will be the first Universal Studios theme park in Southeast Asia, where 20 rides will be up-and-running during the resort’s soft launch (see accompanying story on Universal Studios Singapore rides).

When fully completed, it would boast 24 movie-themed rides and attractions, out of which 18 are exclusively designed to be premiered in Singapore.

Hollywood filmmaker Steven Spielberg was brought in as creative consultant to help design the park’s seven themed areas, including Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Sci-Fi City, Far Far Away and Madagascar.

Among the most highly anticipated for thrill-seekers and sci-fi fans would the Battlestar Galactica-themed rollercoaster ride the world’s tallest “duelling coaster” featuring two roller coasters set to “battle” each other.

In a Press conference, Universal Studios Singapore assured that the rides would always be refreshing. Universal Parks & Resorts director of sales and marketing, Douglas Trueblood said, “New attractions
would be added every three to five years.”

Resorts World Sentosa assistant director of communications Robin Goh said for the soft launch, four out of the six hotels, including the ultraluxurious Maxims Tower, Michael Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel and Festive Hotel (Festive Walk), would be open.

“The casino would also be fully operational then. As well as various food and beverage and retail outlets along Festive Walk,” said Goh, adding that another two hotels, including a destination spa would be ready shortly after.

Goh also said the Marine Life Park, Maritime Xperiential Museum and other attractions, including the gigantic robot crane dance would be launched progressively.

Genting Group chairman Tan Sri Lim Kok Thay had said: “Resorts World Sentosa is my vision for a trail-blazing tourism product with universal appeal. Genting and its partners together will fulfill this visionary
collection of ideas that will shift the paradigm of tourism in the region.”

Construction work on the resort started in 2007 after Genting International won the bid to build the resort in
2006.

Genting International is the overseas investment arm of Malaysia’s Genting Group, which operates resorts in different parts of the world.

Pimped-up thrill rides

IMAGINE yourself strapped into an alien spacecraft battling humans in a dogfight in space at break-neck speed; being chased by hungry dinosaurs ready to snap at you as you float along the rapids of a "lost world" forest; or emerging from dark catacombs to find yourself face-to-face with the undead Imhotep and his legion of mummies ready to kill you and your family.

While these are common scenes in blockbusters, get set to immerse yourself in the simulation of such wild adventures when Universal Studios Singapore launches its 24 moviethemed rides and attractions
all designed with the creative aide of filmmaker Steven Spielberg to let you "ride the movies".

With constructions at their final stages, reporter TEOH EL SEN took a sneak-peek tour and the following is what he thinks would best describe how some of these US$1 billion attractions would look and feel when they are ready.

● ENCHANTED AIRWAYS

A circular children’s ride where children can sit in and pilot pre-historic birds to “soar up” in the sky or “plunge down into the shadows”.

● AMBER ROCK CLIMB

A rock climbing experience with the backdrop of a dinosaur remains excavation site where “a treasure awaits” those who reach the top.

Get tucked safely under the wings of a flying Pteranodon for a prehistoric bird’s eye view as the coaster gently glides over the lush foliage and trees of Jurassic Park.

● WATERWORLD

Based on the blockbuster film Waterworld, enjoy the award-winning performance by stuntmen to show various death-defying stunts, explosions and many more in a live water show at a set stadium where guests can expect to get wet.

AREA: SCI-FI CITY

DOGFIGHT RIDE: The Battlestar Galactica

● BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (Human or Cylon)

This looks to be among the most extreme rides at the theme park as the world’s tallest pair of duelling rollercoasters at 42.5 metres tall. Guests can choose either the “Human” side or the alien “Cylon” side to be seated or suspended in their own "spaceship" while going at a top-speed of 95km/h in this 87-second ride on a 1km track.

The ride will propel thrill-seekers on several inversions, a zero-g roll, a Cobra roll, corkscrews, vertical loops and severalnear collisions mere inches apart from the other side.

● ACCELERATOR

A whirling twirling attraction that will test your “inter-gallactica” stamina as you spin madly in a power pod that allows you to control the spinning speed.

● TRANSFORMERS

Only debuting in 2011, little is revealed aboutthis ride but expect to see stunning robotics and “mega special effects”, including 3D High Definition media.

Marine magic

SWIM with dolphins and handfeed fearsome tiger sharks in an enclosed cage! While Universal Studios is already set to be an exciting attraction, the Marine Life Park would certainly not lose out when it is unveiled in progressive stages after next year's soft launch.

It will be the largest oceanarium in the world with 20 million gallons of water and an extensive collection as many as 700,000 aquatic animals, including bat-rays, sharks, eels in this 8-hectare attraction home.

With a 6.6 million gallon lagoon, visitors can also get up close and personal with whale sharks world's largest fish through one of the world's largest panoramic viewing panels.

Also, the Maritime Xperiential Museum (where experiential learning is the process of making meaning from direct experience) will engage museum-goers to the story of the shipping Silt Route in an unconventional, yet familiar, teaching language sight, sound and immersion.

The museum is dedicated to celebrating Asia's maritime heritage with a 360-degree multimedia theatre where guests board a shipwrecked Arabiabound vessel near Singapore 1,100 years ago.

In that presentation, the boat goes under the deck rolls, pitches, turns and eventually sinks when visitors emerge from the theatre up close with a shipwreck surrounded by deep ocean life.

Battle Star Galactica Thrillride at Universal Studios Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore announced over two dozen attractions opening soon in early 2010, which includes 18 rides and attractions specially created or adapted for Singapore.

For Sci-Fi fans, check out the "Sci-Fi City" zone, which will house the Battlestar Galactica roller coaster ride, which is the world's tallest duel roller-coaster ride. The Humans vs Cylons ride will push thrill seekers on several inversions, zero-G roll, cockscrews and near-collision trajectories mere inches apart.

Another highly anticipated attraction is Transformers ride which will debut in Singapore in 2011 before heading out to the US theme parks.

The other zones in the theme park includes "Far Far Away" which is based on the Shrek universe, and a zone based on the movie Madagascar.

Universal Studios Singapore sits on a 49 hectares of the Resorts World at Sentosa, which also includes six hotels, a marine life park, a water park and a casino.

How much will the Tickets to Universal Studios Singapore cost?

At around S$70 per entry to Universal Studios Singapore (USS), Genting Singapore, which invested more than S$1 billion in the theme park could reap around S$315 million a year in ticket sales alone.

Speaking at a news conference yesterday, Douglas Trueblood, general manager (sales & marketing) for Universal Parks and Resorts, said the target is to attract 4.5 million visitors a year to the theme park at Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS), which is owned by Genting Singapore.

Assuming USS sells 4.5 million tickets at S$70 apiece, ticket sales could hit S$315 million.

Mr Trueblood did not reveal ticket prices, but Genting Singapore chairman and CEO Lim Kok Thay has said they will be lower than those at other Universal Studios theme parks.

Earlier estimates by analysts put the entry price at around S$80, compared with about US$70 in the US and 5,800 yen in Japan.

Analysts at Morgan Stanley Research (Asia-Pacific) expect entry prices to USS to be even lower at around S$70.

In a recent Morgan Stanley Research report, it was also estimated that USS could register total revenue of S$388 million for 2010, S$491 million for 2011 and S$545 million for 2012. This includes revenue from merchandising and F&B.

Interestingly, Morgan Stanley Research said Genting Singapore can offer cheaper entry tickets because of the lower construction cost of USS at about US$1 billion, which it said is about half the cost of Universal Studios Japan.

Morgan Stanley Research noted that no details have been made public on the USS franchise fee, but said it is likely that RWS will have to pay an upfront fee as well as a share of gross profit to Universal Studios once the theme park is operating.

Giving an update on USS which is in the final stages of construction, Mr Trueblood said that of the park's 24 rides, 20 will open next year, with 18 of them original or adapted for Singapore.

Universal Parks & Resorts chairman and CEO Tom Williams said: 'Universal Studios Singapore will be a unique experience and family destination with many new rides, shows and themes that can't be found at other Universal Studios parks.'

USS will consist of seven themed zones that surround a man-made lagoon. The zones are: The Lost World; Ancient Egypt; Sci-Fi City; New York; Hollywood; Madagascar; and Far Far Away. Rides including the Jurassic Park Rapids Adventure, WaterWorld and Revenge of the Mummy will be located within these zones.

Mr Trueblood revealed that a Transformers attraction will open in 2011 and other new attractions will be added in turn. 'Over the years, we will evolve,' he said.

Resorts World Sentosa offers 45,000 jobs

Resorts World Sentosa, which is expected to open its doors early next year, will provide up to 45,000 job opportunities.

The resort’s assistant director of communications, Robin Goh, said the vast employment opportunities created would also help boost the economic situation in the region.

“Resorts World Sentosa is a one-of-a-kind destination and will definitely attract much interest,” he said during a media familiarisation tour on Tuesday.

He added that the company had already sent a batch of employees to be trained overseas.

“They have been sent to Universal Studios in Orlando, United States, for robust training exercises and have returned to share their knowledge with the locals,” he said.

Goh said most Singaporeans did not have experience in the casino or theme park industry as the organisation was the first to open one in the city-state.

He said various jobs with specific expertise would also be offered to international employees.

“Employment priority will be given to locals but if we cannot get them, we will open it to those from other countries,” he added.

Resorts World Sentosa CEO Tan Hee Teck said the project, one of the most expensive tourism projects in the world, cost over US$4.4bil (RM14.8bil).

“One of the main draws of the resort will be Universal Studios Singapore, which will feature more than 24 different rides for visitors,” he said.

He said the park was expected to generate over S$4.5mil (RM10.8mil) in the first year.

Universal Studios Singapore includes seven different themed zones such as Ancient Egypt, The Lost World, Far Far Away and Madagascar.

Spielberg's Sentosa `not competing' with Disney

Hollywood producer and director Steven Spielberg lent his hand to boost the profile of upcoming Universal Studios Singapore as the city-state tries to drum up Hong Kong interest in the project.

Spielberg helped create the theme park - part of a bigger integrated Resorts World - which, its backers claim, will not compete with Hong Kong Disneyland.

Featuring 24 rides and attractions, the US$4.4 billion (HK$34.32 billion) resort, developed on Sentosa Island, will open in the first quarter of next year and it expects to attract 13 million visitors within its first 12 months.

In a five-minute video clip, Spielberg said.

"I am excited to help create Universal Studios Singapore ... a spectacular destination for the people of the region and the people of the world ... a place where our imagination becomes world reality," he said.

"Universal gives the people an opportunity to ride the movies."

Universal Studios Singapore will have attractions based on movies such as Jurassic Park, Shrek and Waterworld.

"I am particularly excited about the DreamWorks Animated theme lands of Far, Far Away and Madagascar," he said. Visitors "will be put inside, making them the superstars. These memories can last a lifetime."

Edward Koh Boon Wee, chief representative regional director for Greater China of the Singapore Tourism Board, said Hong Kong is an important market for the city-state.

More than 300,000 Hongkongers visit Singapore each year. "They like to go to Singapore for

food, shopping and buying our local products. I hope the integrated resorts will give them more entertainment options to stay another day, another night on the island," Koh said.

Universal Studios Singapore will target Asia as its key market.

"We call it the integrated resort and it is all encompassing. It is similar to the positioning of Singapore as a global leisure destination and a convention and services city of Asia," he said.

Koh does not think it will compete directly with Disneyland because they are "very different propositions."

THEME-PARK lovers will soon get the chance to ride on the world’s tallest duelling roller coasters and escape from a Tyrannosaurus rex on a whitewater raft.

Universal Studios Singapore in Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS) has unveiled 20 out of its 24 slated rides and attractions– 18 of which are unique to Singapore.

The highlight of the theme park is the duelling roller coasters.

Standing at 42.5m, it is the tallest pair of its kind and the first to have two different types of coasters – one seated and the other suspended.

Both will be launched at the same time and experience near misses with each other.

There will also be 13 eateries serving classic American food and Asian cuisine, and 12 retail outlets selling souvenirs, apparel and film merchandise.

An RWS spokesman said that the remaining four attractions would be introduced progressively to encourage repeat visits.

RWS, which has invested over US$1 billion (S$1.4 billion) in the park, expects 4.5 million visitors in the first year.

Opening hours have not been finalised and admission fees will be announced at a later date.

Said Mr John Hallenbeck, director of park operations: “The pricing structure is in its final stages right now so we don't have the exact prices, but they will be competitive with those of the other theme parks.”

There are three other Universal Studio theme parks – in Hollywood and Orlando in the United States, and Osaka, Japan.

A day pass to the park in Hollywood costs US$69 (S$96), while Osaka charges 5,800 yen (S$89).

And visitors need not worry about Singapore’s tropical heat– 70 per cent of the park will be sheltered.

There will also be air-coolers and fans around the park, and some queues will be air-conditioned.

The 20ha theme park is at the end stages of construction.

It is the first in South-east Asia and will open to the public in the first quarter of next year.

Where Ogres, Penguins and a Dragon Reign

Among the six zones in Universal Studios Singapore, DreamWorks is the largest in terms of footprint size; it takes up nearly the whole northern section of the park. In fact it may even be considered two zones!

Some of you may have read the press release announcing collaboration between USS and Dreamworks. If that has whet your appetite and you want to know a little bit more, dive on in!

This huge zone is separated into two distinctly themed areas: Far Far Away and Madagascar.

Far Far Away on the eastern region revolves around the fairy tale world of Shrek. Entering from the east, expect to be awed by the 40-metre high Far Far Away Castle as you pass under the castle wall’s archway to be greeted by attractions and sights featuring the now familiar names of Shrek, Gingerbread Man and of course the quirky Donkey, among others.

If you head towards the eastern wing of the castle, you’ll come across the Donkey LIVE show, where guests get to interact with the lovable Donkey in a theatre setting. I wonder whether there will be a real life Donkey character in there…

If you head towards the castle entrance proper, you will reach the location of Shrek 4-D. Be indulged in a whole new, never-been-seen-before Shrek adventure, where you’ll be in for a treat of 3-D cinematography, complete with special glasses as well as seats that come equipped with all kinds of (hidden) contraptions to bring your 3-D experience into the next dimension, hence the name Shrek 4-D.

Nestled in between Shrek 4-D (in the main keep) and Donkey LIVE (in the east wing), you’ll come across the Fairy Godmother’s Potion Shop, perfect for those looking for memorabilia and gifts to bring away. Not only that, right at the back of this shop, you’ll stumble across a miniature Ferris wheel, the Magic Potion Spin, an attraction in itself, where the countless potions for sale are actually made, or so we are made to believe! Hop on and maybe, just maybe, you may get sprinkled with some magical powers during the ride.

After all that, you can cross Romeo Drive and visit either Goldilocks Fried Chicken “Tastes just right!” or Friar’s Good Food (or both!) to quench your thirst and satiate your hunger. When your belly is full and you are ready to adventure on, head on west and…

You will see, on your left, the Enchanted Airways. This is merely a moniker for a ride on the back of a dragon! Hop onto the Dragon (that female dragon that’s enamored with Donkey) and coast along to sights from the World of Shrek. This ride is fit for the whole family, so parents can join their young children for this adventure.

It is then time to bid farewell to Shrek and friends. And it’s time to move it, move it to the land of the lemurs, the Foosa and the cast from Madagascar.

If you haven’t had enough to munch on previously, or if you want to try the tastes of Madagascar, head on to Casa de Wild right beside Far Far Away Castle. Or you can keep your tummy space for later and visit Madagascar: A Crate Adventure.

Follow the quartet of Alex, Marty, Melman and Gloria of the Madagascar fame on their adventure after the ship they were on ended up beached on the shores of Madagascar. As this is a flume ride – a crate ride to be exact – be prepared to get slightly soaked while taking in the sights of lush jungles to forbidding volcano, to meeting the lemurs and the erratic King Julien. You may even get to show off some of your dance moves.

Of course we must not forget the surprisingly charming though thoroughly psychotic penguins; in fact they are undoubtedly the reason you – and the quartet – are stranded in Madagascar in the first place.

Once you are done saving the world (or saving the lemurs), grab some memorabilia and/or photos of yourself during the adventure on your way back out at the Penguin Mercantile – the penguins never fail in trying to take you unawares.

Right across the street, you will see the domain of the King Julien and the lemurs where you will find the King Julien’s Beach Party-Go-Round. This is a carousel ride meant for the young – sorry folks, adults not allowed. As the kids spin around, be prepared to be assailed by King Julien and his repertoire of high-energy dance music. Now if only he can shut up for a while…

After you get away from the incessant King Julien, now it’s time to eat some more! Visit either Gloria’s Snack Shack right beside the carousel or head back towards Casa de Wild.

And that’s about a short preview of Dreamworks. Phew! Right about now, I should be getting a nice pina colada at Gloria’s Snack Shack, if only I can fast forward into the future. I can wish, can’t I?

New Monorail Station in the Heart of FestiveWalk

Next stop: Resorts World Sentosa! A new train station for the Sentosa Express monorail will soon be ready in the heart of FestiveWalk, the throbbing hub of Resorts World. The station's location outside the main entrance to Universal Studios Singapore is expected to make the Sentosa Express a popular way for visitors to commute from VivoCity to the theme park and its array of shopping and dining outlets. The station replaces the Waterfront station that was demolished in late 2007 to make way for construction of FestiveWalk.

Resorts World at Sentosa, a Resort of resorts, will welcome some 10 million tourists by 2015, generating S$15 billion in tourism receipts, half of Singapore’s target. It will increase spending on sightseeing and entertainment per tourist from two per cent currently to more than 10 per cent.

As part of its Tourism 2015 targets, the Singapore government hopes to draw in 10 million visitors in 2015 and generate an estimated S$15 billion in tourist receipts. Economists predict the Singapore economy could grow between 6.5 to 7.5 percent when the resorts are operational from 2009. The construction sector is also expected to benefit by growing 10 to 15 percent on year from now to 2009". We may not get the 25 million visitors that Hong Kong gets, but if the 10 or 15 million visitors we get spend more per head, that would have much more significant impact on the services sector, hospitality-related sector than any of the single-event before that. To me, the award of IR probably marked the potential of reshaping the tourism sector in Singapore in the years to come," says Mr. Song.

Malaysia’s Genting International has been named the winner of Singapore’s second casino licence for a gaming and entertainment complex on Sentosa island. Genting and its sister company Star Cruises have tied up with Universal Parks and Resorts of the United States for the project, promising to invest more than S$5 billion (about RM11 billion). Genting International which is the overseas investment arm of the Genting Group, is a leading integrated resorts specialist with over 20 years of international gaming expertise and global experience in developing, operating and/or marketing internationally acclaimed casinos and integrated resorts in different parts of the world, including Australia, Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Genting International is listed on the Main Board of the Singapore Exchange.

Star Cruises which is the third largest cruise line in the world, is a global cruise brand with a combined fleet of 22 ships in service and under construction, and more than 35,000 lower berths cruising to destinations and islands in Asia-Pacific, North and South America, Hawaii, Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, Mediterranean, Bermuda and the Antarctica under the Star Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, NCL America, Orient Lines and Cruise Ferries brands. Star Cruises is listed on The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong and quoted on CLOB International in Singapore.

Currently, design and development work for the Resort’s buildings and attractions are in the advance
stages. The first tender for the Resort’s three superstructure building contracts was called on 3 September. The other two tenders will be called in the following four weeks. RWS will award the first of these three tenders, which together are worth more than S$1 billion, in January 2008. Construction on the Resort’s first two hotels, Maxims Residences and Hotel Michael, will commence in February 2008.

Resorts World at Sentosa will include six hotels, one specially designed by American architect Michael Graves, with more than 1,800 rooms. It is expected to contribute S$2.7 billion to Singapore's economy, or 0.8 percent of the city-state's gross domestic product, as well as add 30,000 jobs by end of 2015.

Resorts World at Sentosa will also include a Universal Studios theme park with 22 attractions, 16 designed specifically for Singapore, and a DreamWorks animation studio. The Universal Studios theme park will take up roughly half of the site. The resort will have meeting facilities, retail stores and a 1,600-seat theater for a resident show by the team behind Cirque du Soleil.

Singapore last year reversed its decades-old ban on casino gambling in an ambitious attempt to double visitor arrivals to 17 million by 2015. The first contract was awarded in May to Las Vegas Sands Corp., which plans to open its US$3.6 billion casino resort by July 2009.

For the second casino, the government evaluated the proposals based on tourism appeal whiic is a hefty 45 percent of the criteria, architectural design, level of investment and strength of the bidding consortium and partners. There will be four world-class gated attractions at Resorts World at Sentosa offering the best of dry and wet for both young and old. Each attraction will be developed by a global brand name and all will be ‘must-visit’ venues.

Resorts World at Sentosa will be home to Quest Marine Life Park, the world’s largest oceanarium. This is a one-of-a-kind marine park, with an emphasis on family fun, providing visitors of all ages with interactive multi-sensory experiences as they learn about and discover the life of marine creatures and the need for ocean conservation. The eight-hectare Quest Marine Life Park will be home to as many as 700,000 aquatic animals, including bat rays, dolphins and the world’s largest collection of coral reef and open ocean fish. The marine park will also house a 6.6 million gallon lagoon that allows visitors the chance to snorkel and dive with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world that can grow up to more than 14 metres in length.

Six hotels at Resorts World at Sentosa will provide unparalleled choice for visitors with a dazzling array of world-class accommodation totaling more than 1,800 rooms. Each hotel is designed to cater to a specific market niche, making the resort suitable for all leisure and business visitors.

The Maritime Xperiential Museum, dedicated to the celebration of the maritime heritage of Asia, will engage visitors’ five senses to retell the fascinating history of the Asian maritime Silk Route. In addition, the museum will feature Asia’s first marine genomics research and learning centre, which will be set up by Dr J. Craig Venter, a pioneer and leading expert in the field of genomics. The resort will offer a fantastic choice of accommodation with six world-class hotels providing 1,830 rooms. It will also house an integrated wellness spa, to be operated by luxury spa operator ESPA.
